NEW YORK (April 04, 2001) – The New York City Gay Hockey Association (NYCGHA) has announced that ice hockey team the ‘NY Lions’, has become the first gay team in the history of the Chelsea Piers Adult Hockey League to play in the Division VI Competitive League. Chelsea Piers has managed the Adult Ice Hockey League for over 5 years and the entry of the ‘NY Lions’ to competitive ranks has set the tone for further gay teams to aim for higher divisions.

NY Lions Captain and NYCGHA co-founder Jeff Kagan said, “The NY Lions are thrilled to be recognized as the first gay hockey team to ever play in Division VI; with the skills and talent of this new team, I am confident they will make a big impact within this division.”

The ‘Rockets’ or ‘Ugly Americans’ next in line?

Runners up in the NYCGHA Developmental League Championships, the Rockets may be the next in line to join the competitive ranks at Chelsea Piers. The tenacious team has strengthened into a tight and competitive unit that promises to be the side to beat in the 2001/2002 season, beginning March 31. Another team to watch, the ‘Ugly Americans’, has also completed a solid season after taking the Developmental League Championships last year. They too could find themselves joining the NY Lions in Division 6 after an impressive 2000/2001 on the ice.

Rockets Captain, Gary Shapiro, is confident about future of both teams “Both the Rockets and the Ugly Americans played a great season; with the addition of several talented players to the league, we are confident that we will dominate next season.”

The Rockets and the Ugly Americans begin their new season in the Developmental League on March 31st, and the Lions, whose season began March 9th, play game five on April 6; both games are to take place at Chelsea Piers. For updates schedules and lineups, visit
