Course objectives You will be guided through the process of setting up your own fully functioning website which will be online and operational by the end of the day. Throughout the course you will be taught about online presence, domains, online marketing, social media, webhosting, set-up, installation, customisation, design, content and functionality. We’ll show you everything from installing WordPress and setting it all up to the most useful features and tools within the CMS (Content Management System). You’ll be building your own brand new site and working on it throughout the day. You will learn to apply a professional design, make the site search engine friendly and add the features and functionality you need to further develop and run the site yourself. Timetable 09.30 – 11.00: Stage 1 – Understanding: introduction, the importance of an online presence 11.00 – 12.00: Stage 2 – Research: domains, web hosting and choosing the right set-up 12.00 – 12.30: Break for Free lunch 12.30 – 14.15: Stage 3 – Set-up: the set up, installation and customisation of a website 14.15 – 14.30: Short Coffee Break 14.30 – 17.00: Stage 4 – Development: design, content and functionality Stage 1 – Understanding: introduction, the importance of an online presence Understanding: introduction, the importance of an online presence. Introduction: The course will start with an introduction from The Tutor. will explain who he is, talk about his experience and our company and introduce the team, and then explain the aims of the course and what it is about. Each attendee will then be invited introduce themselves and their business creating potential networking opportunities during the day. Online presence: We will show how today a vast amount of people literally spend their lives online, communicating, searching and shopping. And that a business without a clear, concise and well planned out online presence is missing out on a huge opportunity to engage with the public, showcase themselves and their products and services and ultimately increase sales. All aspects of online marketing will be explained including social media. Stage 2 – Research: domains, web hosting and choosing the right set-up. Domain names: Explanation of domain names and how this system defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority, or control on the internet. We will then go on to explore the history of the domain name and the considerable range of suffixes available. Web hosting: Demystification of web hosting (also known as website hosting, hosting and webhosting) is, and that it is simply the storage of files for one or more internet websites as well as the service of maintaining those files, serving the needs of the people who own the website being hosted and maintained. We will then explore the differences and the pros and cons. Choosing the right set-up: Explanation and discussion of what a huge industry it is and how to make the right choice. Attendees will be helped to research their ideal domain name and select the best one. These will then be registered whilst attendees are at lunch ready for them to use on their return. Stage 3 – Set-up: the set up, installation and customisation of a website Set-up: Most hosting companies provide complex control panel access like eXtend, cPanel and Plesk with hosting packages. These control panels offer various settings which might confuse most users. We will introduce you to our simple to use control panel the aim here is to show you how to access this area and to familiarise you with the system. We will move on to setting up a professional email. Installation: One of the main benefits of choosing a reliable and well supported web host is the option of one-click installs. You will be shown how to use this functionality to install a new website using one of the most popular and easiest website platforms called WordPress. Customisation: Once the installation process has been completed, you will be shown how to finalise the set-up process, how to define your newly created website and how to customise the basic website information required. Next we will familiarise you with the WordPress administration dashboard, and the different areas and what their function is. This will include setting up other users, defining the various settings, and checking for updates to ensure security. Stage 4 – Development: design, content and functionality Content: Content is king of the internet and therefore you will be taught the importance of creating three essential pages within your newly created website and adding content that is informative, descriptive and unique to your business. Design: Design is key to the success of any great website. Luckily WordPress has a vast archive of theme designs that are freely available. You will be shown how to access this archive, what to consider and what to look out for. You will then be shown how to activate a theme using the default WordPress design and be familiarised with theme options and settings. Functionality: WordPress has a vast archive of plugins that open up abilities of the core framework. These functions can include contact forms, testimonials, image galleries, event bookings and even e-commerce. You will be shown how to install and set up an enquiry form for the contact us page. You will then be shown how to test the form by filling it in as if you were a member of the public. Requirements Laptop. (must be able to connect online to Wifi). Parking is available, there is a Pay-and-Display car park next to the building. You will see the car park as you come to the round-a-bout near the venue.
