Mozart & Haydn
Event on 2015-10-24 20:00:00
"Missa in tempore belli" is Haydn's own inscription on his manuscript for this Mass, one of an annual series he wrote for the name day of his patron's wife. Austria was embroiled in war with post-Revolutionary France, and martial fanfares and ominous timpani strokes roil the Mass' concluding Agnus Dei, which turns brighter for the supplication Dona nobis pacem (Give us peace).
Come for: Serving as both pianist and conductor, Sir András Schiff applies his profound love and intimate knowledge of these two composers to a heavenly program beginning with one of Mozart's supreme piano concertos and crowned by one of Haydn’s late, great masses.
And more: In this self-confident Concerto, the piano never loses sight of its role as the orchestra's partner, meshing with the ensemble in the kinds of conversations that Mozart invented and at which no one has ever surpassed him.
